Simple Matters initially approached us to design a clip mechanism for their small Bluetooth LE notification device. The goal was to deliver a clip that balanced grip, cost, size, and ID goals. To deal with varying fabric thicknesses, we came up with a unique “floating tail” hinge and sheetmetal clip. This allowed the clip to collapse down to its smallest size, but expand for thicker fabrics without getting wedged open.
As the clip design matured, Simple Matters expanded our role to own the overall mechanical design and get it refined for production release. By the time the product launched on its successful Kickstarter campaign, we had been involved in all phases of development.
